SUMMARY:Krishnaa - BIC Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:Krishnaa – A Calling to Lord Krishna \nKrishnaa is a vibrant production that brings together a collection of traditional pieces centered around Lord Krishna\, as seen through the eyes of various devotees—Andal\, Radha\, Yashoda\, and a Gopika. \nThe performance opens with the Andal Kautvam and verses from the Nachiyar Tirumozhi\, where Andal envisions Krishna as her divine bridegroom. This is followed by a Varnam in Raga Charukesi\, composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman\, which portrays the journey of a Gopika\, whose yearning for Krishna leads her toward self-realization. \nNext is “Madumeikkum Kanne”\, a Tamil folk song presenting a tender conversation between Yashoda and the young Krishna. As Krishna insists on going out to tend the cows\, Yashoda lovingly tries to persuade him that he is still too young. \nFollowing this is “Lalita Lavanga”\, an Ashtapadi in which the sakhi urges Radha to set aside her anger and reunite with Krishna. \nThe production culminates in the energetic Kalinga Nartana Tillana by Oothukadu Venkata Kavi\, and concludes with a soulful verse on surrender. \nRun Time: 90 minutes \nPresented by\nRukmini Vijayakumar \nAge: 7 yrs and above \nNote : Seating on a first-come\, first serve basis for each section.\nMay 25th \, 7PM\nVenue: @ BIC bengaluru

SUMMARY:Dancer and the Bag - Bengaluru
DESCRIPTION:Rukmini Vijayakumar’s Stand-Up Comedy Debut: \nA Hilarious Take on Life\, Dance & Womanhood \nAcclaimed dancer and choreographer Rukmini Vijayakumar steps into an unexpected spotlight—stand-up comedy! In her debut show\, she brings a comical twist to her personal journey\, touching on the chaos of choosing dance as a career\, growing up in a traditional Indian household\, navigating joint family dynamics\, and the absurdities of societal expectations. \nWith her signature wit\, Rukmini unpacks the quirks of being a woman entrepreneur\, a choreographer\, and a dancer striving to make a living in the arts. From studio interactions and gym encounters to experiences of racism\, travel mishaps\, and the unsolicited judgments thrown her way\, she turns life’s ironies into laugh-out-loud moments. \nThis show is not just about celebrating women—it’s about exposing the hilarity of misogynistic norms and how women continue to shine despite them. Equal parts insightful and ridiculous\, Rukmini’s first venture into stand-up is a fresh\, funny\, and unexpected take on a life well-danced.

SUMMARY:Ishwara
DESCRIPTION:ISHWARA – Journey to Self \nParvati and Parameshwara\, Shiva and Sati\, Masculine and Feminine\, Purusha and Prakruti\, are the many names that describe this mystery of creation. \nThrough Vedanta\, we realise that all of this universe is an embodiment of Ishwara. Shiva and Parvati represent the unmanifest and the manifest in the world around us. The puranas reference the physical manifest forms of Shiva and Parvati as symbolic representations of this philosophy\, attributing human qualities and emotions to relate trivial\, often humorous interactions between them. The stories ultimately carry the idea of both of them representing all of creation\, but in the manifest forms often not realising it. \nIshwara\, is a journey of human emotion\, love\, loss and realisation through the eyes of Shiva and Parvati.

SUMMARY:Abducted
DESCRIPTION:A woman almost always feels a sense of helplessness in situations of physical confrontation with a man. ‘Abducted’ is inspired by stories of abduction and abuse from India and around the world. The act of abusing someone indicates an incapacity to consider another human. It is a desire with no boundaries. Populations have begun to come to terms with degrees of abuse that exist in many forms and shapes. What have we done as societies to cultivate this kind of culture? The position of women has constantly been a point of contention at work\, in homes\, in politics\, in the field of education etc. The representation of a physically strong woman in the modern world\, in films and comics is often attached to the physical objectification of women; but a powerful woman in the workplace is shown wearing a suit with hair slicked back. \nCan we represent strength and power in a female body without objectification\, while also embracing the feminine? \nOne of the only archetypes of power\, carried in a female body is the image of the Indian goddess\, Kali. Kali is embraced as a figurative female energy that holds within herself the ability to annihilate evil and rejuvenate life. She is the keeper of time and space. This particular image has no objectification of the female body attached to it. Kali is sensual\, but does not cater to the male gaze as a sexual object. She is also not ‘pure’ in the sense of being devoid of sexual energy. \nAt which point does the abuse of power bring out the Kali in us ? \nAt which point does a woman’s desire materialise? When does she wield her power\, strength and take charge of her sexuality?

SUMMARY:Shiva
DESCRIPTION:SHIVA consists of two parts. The first half of the performance has the story of Shiva and Sati’s love shared through the course of a Traditional Varnam. The second half of the performance breaks down the emotive content to pure physicality and an inferred narrative that is not literal. \nBoth of these pieces approach the same content from completely different perspectives. The traditional work addresses the spiritual underlying meaning of Shiva and Parvati’s relationship. The 2nd one addresses the human emotion that we attribute to shiva and parvati \nThe performance utilizes the classical vocabulary of Bharatanatyam throughout the performance\, but the context of usage is very different in the two halves. The same topic is explored through two very different and often opposing ideas of creation and presentation.

SUMMARY:Talattu – A Mother's Song and a Lover's Farewell
DESCRIPTION:Talattu explores two types of love: the bond between parent and child\, and the bond between lovers. Both are very different\, and in both cases we are viewed differently by the people who are so important to us. \nTalattu shows the examples of Yashoda and Radha and their love for Krishna. It traces their personal journeys\, full of joys but also sorrows\, and shows how they deal with Krishna’s departure in very different ways. \nWith the birth of a child\, parents give a part of themselves. They experience their child’s joys\, sorrows\, victories and defeats as their own. The role of parents in a child’s growth is immense and the emotional bond that parents have with their offspring is incomparable. This parent-child relationship is immortalized in Indian mythology through Yashoda and Krishna. The relationship is further complicated by the fact that Yashoda is not Krishna’s biological mother\, which calls into question her sense of responsibility. Talattu explores this complex relationship and the love that stands above it all. \nThe second type of relationship is that between lovers. Romantic love is one of the strongest bonds we form in life. It is often celebrated in poetry and literature and represents well-being and togetherness. Sacrificing oneself for one another in this relationship goes hand in hand with the idea of spiritual devotion. \nSuch a love relationship is embodied by Radha and Krishna. Krishna leaves Vrindavan and Radha knows that he must go. She also knows that she will never love anyone else. Their love will remain\, no matter where he goes. He will always be hers. When Krishna leaves\, he is still a child to Yashoda\, but to Radha he is her support and strength. \nMusic & Lyrics: Dr Rajkumar Bharathi\nSound Design: Sai Shravanam\, Resound India\nLighting design: Pritham Kumar\nPhotos: Sunny Jagesar\nChoreography & Script: Rukmini Vijayakumar

SUMMARY:Shiva - Hamburger Sprechwerk

SUMMARY:Ananda
DESCRIPTION:Ananda is the joy that comes from knowing our true identity—the identity that unites us with the entirety of creation. It is the deep\, pervasive happiness that arises when we recognize that the labels and descriptions we attach to ourselves are not our true essence. \nAnanda is the bliss we experience when we feel a kinship not just with our own families or communities\, but with all cultures\, all people\, animals\, nature\, and all of humanity. It is the profound connection that transcends divisions\, filling us with a sense of oneness. \nIn classical art and literature\, this concept of Ananda is often immortalized in metaphors of yearning and longing for an image of divinity. As the seeker or lover realizes the true self\, this divine presence is seen everywhere\, in everything. \nThe performance by Rukmini Vijayakumar will feature a collection of compositions that delve into the theme of Ananda\, expressed through a rich array of metaphors\, evoking this timeless idea of bliss and unity.

SUMMARY:Abducted
DESCRIPTION:The piece critiques how society objectifies women. Women’s bodies are routinely commodified\, and powerful women are often portrayed in masculine clothing—raising questions about whether society is subtly reinforcing the idea that women should be ashamed of their bodies. \nIt also explores how women constantly face danger\, whether on the streets\, at work\, or even within the supposed safety of their homes. Fear of abuse is a daily reality for many\, yet the majority of incidents go unreported. “Abducted” delves into these lived experiences through the stories of women\, weaving a rich tapestry of emotions and imagery that reflect the pain\, strength\, and resilience of survivors. \nAt the heart of the piece is Kali\, a powerful feminine symbol in Indian culture\, representing resistance and empowerment. Kali is a sensual\, sexual\, and unapologetically powerful figure—an archetype of feminine strength. Her image serves as a counter-narrative to societal expectations\, celebrating the beauty and strength found in femininity. Shorter Version “Abducted” critiques the objectification of women in society\, where women’s bodies are commodified. It questions why powerful women are often depicted in masculine forms\, suggesting a subtle shame surrounding femininity. The piece also highlights the constant dangers women face\, whether in public\, at work\, or at home\, where fear of abuse is a daily reality. Through powerful imagery and real stories of women\, “Abducted” reflects the pain and resilience of survivors. At its core\, it draws on Kali\, a symbol of feminine strength\, celebrating empowerment and resistance against societal expectations.

SUMMARY:Kaadal Kadal
DESCRIPTION:Kādal Kaḍal \nEndless Love \nModern relationships are often intricate and far from linear. There are countless layers within friendships\, marriages\, and romantic partnerships. As individuals navigate the immense pressures imposed by a demanding social structure that insists on perfection in every facet of life\, many buckle under the weight of these expectations. \nIn their quest for connection\, people often seek affection wherever they feel seen and heard\, gravitating toward digital spaces that offer fleeting validation. This stems from a deeper emotional need for external recognition\, a way to confirm one’s worth in an overwhelming world. Alongside this\, there is a growing dependence on substances\, which offer temporary relief\, providing a false sense of relaxation and self-worth. This piece delves into the nuanced layers of the human desire to be acknowledged and loved. It explores how this desire\, when left unfulfilled\, can propel individuals into debilitating choices\, leaving them trapped in a cycle of seeking affirmation in unhealthy spaces. \nChoreography and Direction: Rukmini Vijayakumar \nPresented in collaboration with: Eliza Violin: Nandini Shankar \nPercussion: Sunaad Anoor\nThe performance seeks to unravel these emotional complexities through movement and music\, laying bare the raw vulnerabilities that characterize human connection in the modern age.

SUMMARY:The Goddess - Performance in Chennai
DESCRIPTION:The Goddess\nA Raadha Kalpa Production \nBy\nRukmini Vijayakumar \nThe archetype of power\, strength and victory in india is depicted by a female form. Kali\, Devi and Durga are the forms of goddess Parvati that represent strength and power. In most cultures\, the representation of power is always held within a male form\, but the goddesses in the Hindu pantheon carry the metaphor for courage amongst various other essential aspects of life. Knowledge & creation\, wealth\, nourishment and sustenance\, strength\, power\, art\, beauty\, grace and kindness are all represented by the many goddesses. The production features three compositions that explore these various aspects of the Goddesses. \nSundari\nFeatured artist & Composer: Ambi Subramaniam \nThe indian goddesses are adorned with pearls\, rubies and diamonds\, bedecked in jewellery and draped in flowing silks. They have long hair that billows like the clouds\, beautiful voluptuous bodies\, bangles around their delicate wrists and anklets that tinkle when they walk. The goddesses are seen as sensual\, beautiful\, graceful yet powerful. \nManonmani\nFeatured artists & Composers: Sunaad Anoor & Anoor Vinod Shyam \nFrom thought comes creation. The creator and created are both Devi. They have no distance from one another\, and yet they seem separate from one another. Birds take flight\, flowers bloom\, rivers flow\, mountains rise and life begins as Devi gracefully walks. The rhythm of the universe begins. \nMaharajni\nFeatured artists: Keerthana Vaidyanathan & Raghuram Rajagopalan\nComposer: Raghuram Rajagopalan \nPower in a female form\, in the modern world is often depicted without sensuality. A sensual woman in the contemporary world is objectified by commercial media. The indian goddesses hold power while also being sensual and sexual. Kali possesses supreme beauty while simultaneously exuding strength and ferocity. Maharajni\, is the ruler of the universe. She instills fear while also being the kindest and most loving. \nChoreography & Direction\nRukmini Vijayakumar \nRehearsal Directors\nPadmashree & Asokavadhani \nDancers\nRukmini Vijayakumar\nPadmashree\nAsokavadhani\nAnusha Yash\nPriyadarshini Rajendran\nSamyuktha Jujare\nSurabhi Gopal\nReanna Ranjan\nManasvee Gupta \nLight Design\nGyandev Singh \nMusic\nAmbi Subramaniam : Violin\nKeerthana Vaidyanathan : Vocals\nRaghuram Rajagopalan : Vocals\nSunaad Anoor : Percussion\nAnoor Vinod Shyam : Mridangam & Percussion \nPhotography:\nVivian Ambrose
