SUMMARY:Ishwara - Chandigarh
DESCRIPTION:Ishwara by Rukmini Vijayakumar\nIt was choreographed in memory of her father\, K Vijayakumar. \nParvati and Parameshwara\, Shiva and Sati\, Masculine and Feminine\, Purusha and Prakruti\, are the many names that describe this mystery of creation. \nThrough Vedanta\, we realise that all of this universe is an embodiment of Ishwara. Shiva and Parvati represent the unmanifest and the manifest in the world around us. The puranas reference the physical manifest forms of Shiva and Parvati as symbolic representations of this philosophy\, attributing human qualities and emotions to relate trivial\, often humorous interactions between them. The stories ultimately carry the idea of both of them representing all of creation\, but in the manifest forms often not realising it.\nIshwara\, is a journey of human emotion\, love\, loss and realisation through the eyes of Shiva and Parvati.

SUMMARY:Devi - Naayika\, Surat
DESCRIPTION:DEVI\nby\nRukmini Vijayakumar \nConcept & Choreography: Rukmini Vijayakumar \nDevi\nThe feminine energy \nDevi is a collection of traditional pieces that exalt the female goddesses\, their power\, grace and beauty. The goddesses are seen as life giving\, nourishing\, and as the very life force itself. Our many traditional compositions describe the goddesses as beautiful\, with long beautiful tresses\, adorned in jewellery while wielding the strength and power to create and annihilate universes. Devi is a celebration of this divinity that exists within all of us.

SUMMARY:Charis and Adavu Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Adavu Explorations \nRukmini Vijayakumar\, the Director of Raadha Kalpa will teach a class that will be a fun exploration of the practise of Adavus and their usage in choreography\, according to the idea of neutrality and layering in the Raadha Kalpa Method. \nHow do we use adavus in korwes and jathis?\nHow do we think of the dynamics in each movement?\nHow do we innovate within the tradition of movement? \nEligibility: Minimum of 5 years of regular training in bharatanatyam. \nCharis & Abhinaya (Open to all styles) \nThe first hour of the workshop will introduce the movements from the Natyashastra known as the Chairs. These are the building block for Karanas\, as reconstructed by Dr Padma Subrahmanyam. The Charis will be shared and used as a warm-up for the class so students are exposed to the type of dancing that used to exist in India. \nThe second half of the workshop will explore tools for Abhinaya\, and work with some exercises that will be beneficial to all genres of dance. All styles can implement what they assimilate in their respective techniques and aesthetics. “

SUMMARY:Abducted - Invitees Only - Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:Abducted – Unbounded desire\nConcept & Choreography: Rukmini Vijayakumar\nVocals: R Raguram\nMridangam: Vinod Shyam\nPercussion: Sunaad Anoor\nSarangi: Sarfaraz Khan \nAn experimental Bharatanatyam solo\nThe female body is physically weaker than the male body. It is easily dominated by virtue of inherently not possessing the same amount of strength as a man. A woman’s body is projected as an object of desire repeatedly through centuries by societies. The image of a submissive\, helpless woman is repeated through history\, across cultures. It is an image that is used to sell commercial merchandise repeatedly. \nA woman almost always feels a sense of helplessness in situations of physical confrontation with a man. Abduction is inspired by stories of abduction and retribution in India and around the world. The act of abducting someone itself reflects the incapacity to consider another. It is a desire with no boundaries. Populations have begun to come to terms with degrees of abuse that exist in many forms and shapes. The representation of a physically strong woman in the modern world\, in films and comics is largely attached to the physical objectification of women. Can we represent strength and power in a female body without it also carrying sexual appeal? An archetype of a powerful woman that is feared by all is represented in the Indian Goddess\, Kali. Kali is embraced as a figurative female energy that holds within herself the ability to annihilate evil and rejuvenate life. This particular image has no objectification of the female body attached to it. Kali is sensual\, but does not cater to the male gaze as a sexual object. She is also not ‘pure’ in the sense of being devoid of sexual energy. At which point does the abuse of power bring out the Kali in us. At which point does a woman’s desire materialise? When does she wield her power\, strength and take charge of her sexuality?

SUMMARY:Devi & Abducted
DESCRIPTION:DEVI & ABDUCTED by Rukmini Vijayakumar\nConcept & Choreography: Rukmini Vijayakumar\nVocals: R Raguram\nMridangam: Vinod Shyam\nPercussion: Sunaad Anoor\nSarangi: Sarfaraz Khan \nDevi – The feminine energy\nDevi is a collection of traditional pieces that exalt the female goddesses\, their power\, grace and beauty. \nAbducted\nUnbounded desire \nAn experimental Bharatanatyam solo \nThe female body is physically weaker than the male body.
