SUMMARY:Talattu – A Mother's Song and a Lover's Farewell
DESCRIPTION:Talattu explores two types of love: the bond between parent and child\, and the bond between lovers. Both are very different\, and in both cases we are viewed differently by the people who are so important to us. \nTalattu shows the examples of Yashoda and Radha and their love for Krishna. It traces their personal journeys\, full of joys but also sorrows\, and shows how they deal with Krishna’s departure in very different ways. \nWith the birth of a child\, parents give a part of themselves. They experience their child’s joys\, sorrows\, victories and defeats as their own. The role of parents in a child’s growth is immense and the emotional bond that parents have with their offspring is incomparable. This parent-child relationship is immortalized in Indian mythology through Yashoda and Krishna. The relationship is further complicated by the fact that Yashoda is not Krishna’s biological mother\, which calls into question her sense of responsibility. Talattu explores this complex relationship and the love that stands above it all. \nThe second type of relationship is that between lovers. Romantic love is one of the strongest bonds we form in life. It is often celebrated in poetry and literature and represents well-being and togetherness. Sacrificing oneself for one another in this relationship goes hand in hand with the idea of spiritual devotion. \nSuch a love relationship is embodied by Radha and Krishna. Krishna leaves Vrindavan and Radha knows that he must go. She also knows that she will never love anyone else. Their love will remain\, no matter where he goes. He will always be hers. When Krishna leaves\, he is still a child to Yashoda\, but to Radha he is her support and strength. \nMusic & Lyrics: Dr Rajkumar Bharathi\nSound Design: Sai Shravanam\, Resound India\nLighting design: Pritham Kumar\nPhotos: Sunny Jagesar\nChoreography & Script: Rukmini Vijayakumar

SUMMARY:Shiva - Hamburger Sprechwerk
DESCRIPTION:SHIVA consists of two parts. The first half of the performance has the story of Shiva and Sati’s love shared through the course of a Traditional Varnam. The second half of the performance breaks down the emotive content to pure physicality and an inferred narrative that is not literal. \nBoth of these pieces approach the same content from completely different perspectives. The traditional work addresses the spiritual underlying meaning of Shiva and Parvati’s relationship. The 2nd one addresses the human emotion that we attribute to shiva and parvati \nThe performance utilizes the classical vocabulary of Bharatanatyam throughout the performance\, but the context of usage is very different in the two halves. The same topic is explored through two very different and often opposing ideas of creation and presentation.

SUMMARY:Abducted
DESCRIPTION:A woman almost always feels a sense of helplessness in situations of physical confrontation with a man. ‘Abducted’ is inspired by stories of abduction and abuse from India and around the world. The act of abusing someone indicates an incapacity to consider another human. It is a desire with no boundaries. Populations have begun to come to terms with degrees of abuse that exist in many forms and shapes. What have we done as societies to cultivate this kind of culture? The position of women has constantly been a point of contention at work\, in homes\, in politics\, in the field of education etc. The representation of a physically strong woman in the modern world\, in films and comics is often attached to the physical objectification of women; but a powerful woman in the workplace is shown wearing a suit with hair slicked back. \nCan we represent strength and power in a female body without objectification\, while also embracing the feminine? \nOne of the only archetypes of power\, carried in a female body is the image of the Indian goddess\, Kali. Kali is embraced as a figurative female energy that holds within herself the ability to annihilate evil and rejuvenate life. She is the keeper of time and space. This particular image has no objectification of the female body attached to it. Kali is sensual\, but does not cater to the male gaze as a sexual object. She is also not ‘pure’ in the sense of being devoid of sexual energy. \nAt which point does the abuse of power bring out the Kali in us ? \nAt which point does a woman’s desire materialise? When does she wield her power\, strength and take charge of her sexuality?
